David Weinberger segnala cosa è successo a seguito di una falla in una mailing list della Wesleyan University: nasce una comunità per caso e in poche ore vengono inviati in totale la bellezza di 300,000 messaggi !

If no one had replied, the episode would have ended there. But dozens of students hit reply to ask out of the list and, in the process, generated more mail to everyone on it. As reply begat reply and students recognized the names of some friends sending them, many soon realized that they were trapped in an accidental cyber-circle – a kind of unintentional community, with thousands of their fellow students on the other end of a network cable.
By the time a Wesleyan network administrator returned to work 14 hours later and shut down the list, as many as 300,000 more e-mails than usual had passed through Wesleyan’s servers. ”Shout-outs” and curses had dueled. Calls for rationality had been dismissed. The philosopher Hobbes had been evoked. Dorm furniture had been sold to the highest bidder. Allen Ginsberg’s poetry had been spread. And tacos had been requested from Alex.

Scopriamo anche, se vi interessano queste storie dell’orrore, che Yahoo! ai tempi compò eGroups, ora Yahoo! Groups, per la bellezza di 430 milioni di dollari in azioni. Neanche tanto, se pensi che hanno speso mi sembra 2 miliardi di dollari per… un network di siti gratuiti dove la gente posta le foto del proprio cane o gatto – sto parlando di GeoCities.

Vorrei segnalarvi biodiversita.info. L’ho scoperto perché linkavano a un mio post sull’Associazione Kokopelli in Francia. Anche qui sul Web stiamo combattendo per preservare e anzi far germogliare la diversità — senza contare che lo stesso succede anche dietro le quinte nel campo del software. Faremo crollare i portali, estirperemo le erbacce maligne di Redmond e riprenderemo possesso della biodiversità che ci appartiene.
