Are social media what social networks become once you have to try to monetize them by sticking ads all over the place? (how novel an idea!). If not, what exactly do they mean by social media?

Aren’t newspapers social? Don’t people talk about what is written in the paper, or what is on TV? Nowadays, everybody can comment on and reblog everything. The result sometimes is collective intelligence, and most of the times bullshit about recycled bullshit, as Dave Winer once said.
